Ramona - A shooting has left a security guard dead after he tried to detain a suspected shoplifter in the rural community  of  Ramona.   The shooting occurred in the 1800 block of Main Street at approximately 3PM.  According to a preliminary statement by Sheriff's homicide Lieutenant Dennis Burgous , the victim attempted to detain a suspected shoplifter and a struggle ensued.  The suspect produced a gun and fired at the guard, killing him.  Several citizens who witnessed the event held the suspect and turned him over to deputies when they arrived.  The shooting is reported to have occurred outside of the garden shop entrance. Dozens of residents gathered at the scene perimeter and repeatedly expressed their disbelief over what had occurred in this quiet rural community.

 The suspect is being held on suspicion of murder.
